How to Build a Strong Team?
In 2021, employees' sense of belonging and flexibility became more evaluated than ever
Hi everyone,
About a year ago, I watched an amazing TED talk in which Amy Edmonson, professor of leadership and management at Harvard Business School, tackled the subject of psychological safety as a decisive factor in teaming.
Captivated by the issue and the stories Edmonson has presented, I watched another talk of her then I read a bunch of articles about the Aristotle project, conducted by Google in 2012, which has confirmed that the presence or absence of psychological safety is the reason number 1 why some groups thrive while other falter.
I felt so touched by what I learned and remembered my previous experiences that could have been improved if the developers in my teams and our leaders/managers had more awareness about this game-changer. Then I wrote an article about it in November 2020.
Two weeks ago while I was scrolling the news, a title caught my attention. It was about the result of a new survey conducted by Atlassian in 2021 seeking to know the impact of the pandemic and remote work on employees and presenting an approach to how companies should address the shift.
Feeling triggered, I ended writing the following new article where I shared some insights on the topic and a few of the work environments I’ve experienced:
Atlassian Study Reveals That Team Building Is at Risk. Could Our Leaders Prioritize People Over Tasks?
After investigating over 6,000 workers from different industries in 6 countries (Australia, Germany, France, India, Japan, and the USA), the "Reworking Work" research from Atlassian found out that during the last 18 months, employees’ sense of belonging is dropped dramatically and that flexibility became more evaluated than ever:
Only 54% of responders feel like they belong at work.
Only 59% of responders have the feeling that their team is sticking together and forming a unit.
74% of responders want to keep flexible work arrangements
In this post, we'll see how thriving companies and great leaders are addressing this issue.
