Hey everyone,
The other day I was reading a piece from Michael Lin, which is an “aftermath of 2 failed course launches,“ and felt related, though I have a different view of things.
Michael is a software engineer who quit his $450k job at Netflix and started a career as an entrepreneur.
During this journey, he created two courses that took a lot of hard work and dedication. However, the financial return didn’t match the effort he put in, which was disheartening.
So you may ask:
Is it worth it to create a course that might not generate the income you’re looking for?
That’s a tricky question and it might be hard to answer.
I myself have spent 120 hours on my Udemy video course and it has generated right now… Don’t hate me, but I’ll come to this later.
In fact, that effort could be much higher if I include the 50 hours of preparation for my talk at enterJS 2021 conference, which helped me and inspired me to publish a course.
Why it took me all this time to produce that content?
I’m glad you asked.
I created the course at the end of 2021, and at the time I was relatively at the beginning of my journey with visual content creation and the camera was not yet my friend. Whenever I had to turn it on in a meeting, I was feeling totally uncomfortable.
Not to mention that I also needed to work on my articulation, voice tone, and digital body language.
In comparison to articles’ production, videos involve much more steps. The number and type of these steps differ depending on how you want to communicate your content or tell your story. I, generally:
need to prepare my scripts and memorize them before start recording myself or the voiceover.
Then check the voice tone, and repeat the record again if there is background noise, monotony, the voice does not sound relaxed, I need to optimize my facial expression, etc.
Then there is a step of …
…to be continued. Stay tuned!
